There are another couple of trails across the bridge and to the right which are less neatly defined.

Go west on F-28 about 3.5 miles to Greencastle Ave. Take Greencastle two miles north, crossing Swan Lake Rd. just after a pond on your right, until you’re on the dike. SHOREBIRDS: In season there is usually a population or two that can be scoped from the road, to the east. Depending on conditions, you can often leave the road and walk east for a stretch to see more pockets of shorebirds--start just north of the inlet that reaches to the road. Also, with correct water levels on the west side, shorebirds often congregate along the far shore of the bay to your right. You can walk closer to them along the north shoreline, and a little farther west through the grass here is a second inlet with shorebird habitat. In all cases, boots are recommended.

| | | | In western Lee Co. Out of Donnellson take U.S. 218 south two miles and continue south on Hwy. 394, the road to Argyle, where 218 bends southeast; 5.5 miles from this point enter Argyle and turn west on 295th St., where there is an old wooden church. Go three miles west, including the transition from 295th to Belfast Rd., and including several turns toward the end, to the edge of the Croton Unit. A short turnoff to a parking area is on the right along a straight stretch of road. A very rough trail leads north into the woods from here, easiest to explore by simply following the creek. Walking the road from the parking space west to the bridge is also productive. | | |
| | | Croton Unit, Shimek S.F., Bewick's Wren | In western Lee Co. Out of Donnellson take U.S. 218 south two miles and continue south on Hwy. 394, the road to Argyle, where 218 bends southeast; 5.5 miles from this point enter Argyle and turn west on 295th St., where there is an old wooden church. | | | Donnellson Unit, Shimek S.F., field/shrub section | See Donnellson Unit picnic area directions to start. Continue into the unit from the picnic area. Eventually cross a large creek and follow the road right as if toward Shagbark Lake. Rather than head to the lake, turn left (northwest) and continue. Look for the entrance to the campground shortly on your left. Park and walk the trail that begins at roughly the south edge of the lot (opposite side from the outhouses). After a short walk, emerge from the woods into the field/shrub tract. | | |
| | | Donnellson Unit, Shimek S.F., picnic area | In western Lee Co. The entrance is 5.5 miles west of U.S. 218 along Hwy. 2, north side of the road. Stop at the first picnic area you come to on the right side of the entrance road. Walking back along the road itself and listening is often productive, particularly for Hooded Warbler. There is also a trail at the far edge of the picnic area, from along which many good birds are reported. The trail soon loops back to the picnic area if you turn left near the footbridge. A .pdf map is available at http://www.iowadnr.com/wildlife/wmamaps/donnellson.pdf | | |
| | | | In downtown Fort Madison along Highway 61, and next to the BNSF railroad bridge. | | |
| | | Green Bay Bottoms (small marsh) | In eastern Lee County. Three miles either north of Ft. Madison or south of Wever, take J-50/190th St. east from U.S. 61 for two miles, past the railroad tracks, to 355th Ave. Follow 355th south about one mile to the marsh at left (east). | | |
| | | | In eastern Lee Co. Heron Bend is about seven miles downriver from Ft. Madison along U.S. 61, between 260th and 270th Sts., east side of the highway. | | |
| | | | US Hwy 218 into town. Turn right (southwest) on S. 2nd Street, go one block, then left (southeast) on Johnson Street for about three blocks to Mississippi Drive. Follow Mississippi Drive southwest to near its end where a boat access area is found. | | |
| | | | In the town of Keokuk, there is a boat ramp where people feed ducks, and watch Bald Eagles come in to roost. | | |
| | | Mississippi River Pool No. 19, Ft. Madison | Off U.S. 61/Hwy. 2, follow 20th St. to its end at the river. This is a standard Ft. Madison birding stop with no known prohibition against scoping from this location. If sun angle is a problem, return to U.S. 61, proceed upriver and cross the bridge into Illinois at Hwy. 2/Ill. 9. Take Ill. 96 downriver through Niota, and at the first bend leftward, leave 96 and continue on the gravel road straight ahead. Soon take your first right, another gravel road, and scope the backwater directly along the road (Illinois birds). Continue from here looking for places to scope the river itself through small clearings in the trees (a bit tricky). | | |
| | | Mississippi River Pool No. 19, Montrose | In southern Lee Co. (1): Enter into Montrose from U.S. 61, now driving on Main St., straight to the river, where there’s a park. (2): Exit Montrose upriver on 1st St./River Road (You should pass the cemetery on your left), until it fairly soon meets U.S. 61. Scope from the small Linger-Longer rest stop here. (3): Enter onto U.S. 61, heading upriver toward Ft. Madison. Look for the first road east toward the river, 276th St., at a gas station-convenience store. Follow 276th to the river and scope from where it turns sharply left. * See the Nauvoo entry for Pool 19, which often affords better viewing of the duck rafts, and the majority of which are still Iowa birds. | | |
| | | Mississippi River Pool No. 19, Nauvoo, Ill. | Across from Montrose, Ia. (Lee Co.) Follow Illinois Hwy. 96 into town (Mulholland Ave. if coming from the north) When you come to the Mormon Temple, continue straight west on Mulholland (or if arriving from the south, turn left at the temple), past Partridge St. to Main St. (1): Turn right on Main and proceed to the next street, Young St. Turn left, toward the river, and continue to the pump station at the end. Walk around the right side of the station for river scoping. (2): Return to Main and continue upriver. At the edge of town, Main becomes N. Sycamore Haven Dr. Continue and you very quickly come to a boat launch that allows a good viewing point. (3): Continuing upriver on Sycamore Haven affords more viewing; the narrow shoulder only allows a few chances for parking, but the road is lightly traveled. Once cottages begin to appear along the river side of the road, there is no more viewing. The easiest return to Hwy. 96 is to drive back into Nauvoo. | | |
| | | | In southern Lee Co. Follow Hwy. 404 into Montrose, becoming Main St., almost to the river. The cemetery is just upriver along 1st St., over the bridge, on the left. | | |
| | | | This marsh is in the town of Montrose just off US Highway 61. | | |
|
| | | | In Cedar Rapids, Linn Co. Take the H Ave. exit off I-380 in town, and the lake appears quickly to the west. H Ave. ends at Shaver Rd., and parking is found directly across the road, and by following Shaver south (left) and then turning right, before the tracks. From this second lot, waterfowl also populate the channel found by walking past the lake toward Quaker Oats. | | |
| | | | In Cedar Rapids: Take I-380 to eastbound Highway 100. Go east on Highway 100 about 3 miles until you reach the intersection with Highway 151. Turn south on 151 for about a mile, and the cemetery is on the west side of the road. | | |
| | | Cedar River in Cedar Rapids | Old River Rd. and roller dam - Off U.S. 30 about one mile east of I-380, take C St. north one mile to Ely Rd. on your right. Follow Ely as it quickly bends sharply right and then take Old River Rd. on your left along the river. The dam comes up fairly quickly. Otis Rd. - Take the 7th St. exit off I-380 in town, near Quaker Oats. Proceed to the second light, 1st Ave., and turn right one block to 6th St. Turn left on 6th St. and follow it ten blocks until it bends left becoming Otis Rd. Soon Otis Rd. veers right and runs along a bend in the river. | | |
| | | Indian Creek Nature Center | Go to Cedar Rapids on highway 380 and take the Diagonal Drive exit. Continue on Diagonal Drive, which turns into 8th avenue, which turns into Mount Vernon Road. Continue going east on Mount Vernon Road until you get to Bertram Road with "A Touch of Class" convention center and an Indian Creek Nature Center sign on the right. Turn right onto Bertram road and then drive across a large blue bridge. Continue along Bertram Road until you reach the Nature Center parking lot at the intersection of Bertram and Otis Roads. | http://www.indiancreeknaturecenter.org/visit/directions/ | |
| | | | At the Eastern Iowa airport in Cedar Rapids: It was seen from Walford Road, about one-third mile west of 18th Street (just west of where Walford road makes a dip to the south and back) | | |
| | | | a few miles NE of Center Point on the 16th. The owl was 100 yards from the road in a stubble field. The field is on the east side of Fairchild Rd., 4/10 mile north of Hannen Rd. | | |
| | | Matsell Bridge Natural Area | From the town of Anamosa: Take Cherry St NW out of town. This road turns into Ridge Rd (E28). Take Ridge Rd about 4 miles northwest, and then it turns into Buffalo Ridge Rd. Go a little more than a mile northwest, and this road will intersect with Hart Rd. Take a left for about 1/2 mile on Hart Rd, and there will be Matsell Park Rd, where you will turn left and enter the park. | | |
| | | | - on the west edge of Cedar Rapids in Linn Co. About 4.5 miles west on U.S. 30 from I-380, take Stony Point Rd. less than three miles north to Worcester Rd. Turn left (west) on Worcester to the park. | | |
| | | | In Cedar Rapids: At the foot of 32nd St. Dr. in SE Cedar Rapids. | | |
| | | Pleasant Creek S.R.A., main scoping & owls | In western Linn Co, ten miles northwest of Cedar Rapids. For all points except the south section of the lake: From Blair’s Ferry Rd. at the north edge of Palo, take Palo Marsh Rd./W-36 three miles north to the park entrance road on the left (west). The drive you come to skirting the lake does not completely circle the lake. Turning left it will end at some jetties and boat launches, on the south shore (the lakeside pines with owl sightings are reached from the parking area here), and to the right it will end in the campground, which is actually away from the north shore, and without scoping possibilities. However, look for a lefthand turnoff just before the campground, at the top of a rise, which leads to good viewing of the lake and of an inlet. Probably the most consistently fruitful waterfowl viewing is from the shelter area near the dam, just after you turn right onto the road skirting the lakeshore. | | |
| | | Pleasant Creek S.R.A., southwest water | In western Linn Co., about ten miles northwest of Cedar Rapids. Just north of Palo, from Blair's Ferry Rd. and Palo Marsh Rd./W-36, continue west about one half mile on Blair's Ferry. When the road bends southwest (leftward), look for Hollenbeck Rd. leading off to the right. Follow Hollenbeck north one mile to Bear Creek Rd. on the left (west). Follow Bear Creek Rd. about three miles, which includes a bend to the north (rightward), becoming Strawn Rd., to its end at a parking lot at the south water of Pleasant Creek Lake. Standing on the jetty here allows scoping, though distant, to the far west end of this section of water, as well as northward into water unviewable from the main park road. | | |
| | | | About three miles east of Cedar Rapids. The park's north entrance is one half mile west on Hwy. 100 from Hwy. 13, and shown on the Cedar Rapids inset on the state highway map. Enter and soon take the first right turn, and then very quickly another right turn, and follow this road to various birding spots throughout the park. After paralleling Hwy. 100 for a stretch, in winding fashion past grasslands, the road turns sharply left away from the highway, and soon you come to the parking lot in front of the lodge. Here the road becomes a loop, and can be taken in either direction to various parking areas and trails. | | |
| | | | Just east of Cedar Rapids. The park's north entrance is one half mile west on Hwy. 100 from Hwy. 13, and shown on the Cedar Rapids inset on the state highway map. Enter and soon take the first right turn, and then very quickly another right turn. Follow this road as it parallels Hwy. 100 in winding fashion, to a pond on your right just before the road finally turns decisively left and away from the highway. | | |
| | | | in southeast Cedar Rapids. The park is just east of 12th Ave. SE and 19th St. SE. | | |
| | | | in Linn Co., northwest of Cedar Rapids. On the north side of Cedar Rapids, take Blair’s Ferry Rd. west off I-380 five miles, including several curves, to Feather Ridge Rd. Take Feather Ridge one mile north (right) to Morris Hills Rd. Take Morris Hills west one mile to the park. | | |
|
| | | Cairo Woods W.A., northwest and west sections | In central Louisa Co. Take G-62 west from Wapello 7.5 miles, or, G-62 east from U.S. 218 ten miles, to R Ave. Follow R Ave. north two miles, through Cairo, zigzagging east and north several times, and becoming Q Ave., to 100th St. on the left (west). Follow 100th until it peters out into a nearly one-lane dirt road, and follow this left, then right, and downhill to the parking area. Enter on the path leading uphill from the parking lot gate and shortly emerge into an open field area. The best walk is to take the trail going south from here (left). Soon, at the edge of the woodlot, you come to a choice to turn left or continue straight: Leftward will soon continue south past ponds, woodlots, and grassland tracts, and eventually into a large shrubby section; Continuing straight (which quickly becomes a right turn past the woodlot) will lead on a very long walk west through and into several woodland tracts. | | |
| | | Cairo Woods W.A., southeast section, Y-B Chats | In central Louisa Co. Trails are winding and complex, defying easy verbal description. Take G-62 west from Wapello 8.5 miles, or, G-62 east from U.S. 218 nine miles, to S Ave. Go one mile north on S Ave. to a lane leading east (right) to the parking area. Start with the trail closest to the fence at right, and follow it as it heads generally northeast into various brush-and-meadow sections, mostly along and off the right side of the trail. One of the early right-going trails is easily seen to be a loop around a small field; this is worth checking, but it is the next right-going trail that heads into the most chat-productive shrubby area. If you have the right area, there should be a trail on the far side of the shrubby area going downhill and rightward and into a wooded section along a creek (listen for White-eyed Vireo in this shrubby section as well). | | |
| | | Cone Marsh, east side (the "caboose") | In northwest Louisa Co. Two miles north of Conesville along Hwy. 70, go west on G-28, 1.8 miles to T Ave. on the south. Or, from X-14 coming south from Lone Tree in Johnson Co., go 1.2 miles east on G-28 to T. Go one mile south on T to the first bend. | | |
| | | Cone Marsh, general viewing | In northwestern Louisa Co. From Lone Tree in southern Johnson Co., follow X-14 south about six miles, including some turns, to G-28. Continue south from this point on V Ave., a gravel road, about one half mile to the northwest corner of the marsh. Or from Conesville in Louisa Co., take 250th St. (becoming 220th) west from Hwy. 70 about 2.5 miles to the southeast corner of the marsh. There are several parking areas for viewing along the west and south sides of the marsh, including a dike walk on the west side. Also, 1.5 miles east along G-28 from X-14, take T Ave. south one mile for viewing of the marsh's east side. | | |
| | | | From Wapello, go east on Cty 99 (formerly State 99) for 2-3 miles to 114th Ave. Follow that gravel rd for 2.2 miles. At that point state land is on each side of the rd. with cables to prevent vehicles from driving on the area. | | |
| | | Indian Slough, Kuder Lake Access | In eastern Louisa Co. Two miles north of Wapello on U.S. 61, just north past the Iowa River, take K Ave. west about 1.5 miles to Indian Slough's Main Access entrance road on your left, where K bends right. Continue on K past this point and then shortly take the first left (west), 125th St. One half mile west on 125th, look for a very narrow lane on the left, leading to the Kuder Lake Access parking area (the lane sometimes has deep ruts toward its end). Walk down the bank from the parking area. | | |
| | | Indian Slough, Main Access | In eastern Louisa Co. Two miles north of Wapello on U.S. 61, just north past the Iowa River, take K Ave. west about 1.5 miles to the slough’s Main Access entrance road on your left, where K bends right. From the parking area enter the fields at right and take the trails to the edge of the slough, walking generally northward. A trail will eventually parallel the shoreline. There is also viewing as you first approach the parking area. | | |
| | | | - in eastern Louisa Co. Just west of Grandview, take U.S. 61 south a little more than three miles from Hwy. 92 to G-56, which is a gravel road east off U.S. 61 (or, take U.S. 61 north 3.5 miles from its intersection with Hwy. 99 in Wapello). Go east on G-56 three miles to a T-intersection at X-61. Turn north on X-61 and then very quickly turn east on 120th St. Continue east on 120th, downhill and then into the wildlife refuge. | | |
| | | | In southeastern Louisa Co. Begin in Toolesboro on Hwy. 99. Follow the sign for the access pointing you north, along Prairie St. At the bottom of the hill is a gate, which begins the public area. The road runs between wooded backwaters. 0.4 miles from the gate come to a parking area on the left. The trail from here leads beside a section of wetland to the right. This wetland is larger than appears and can be circumvented, not smoothly, from its far side. Otherwise the main trail, sometimes very muddy, leads eventually between two woodland ponds; ultimately through open land to a small lake. Continuing on the road leads along more wooded backwater, to the access. | | |

One can also get there from Highway 65 by going west 1.5 miles on 467th Street (this is about 2 miles south of the town of Lucas).
| | | Mine Pond, Lucas Unit, Stephens S.F. | In western Lucas Co. Just west outside of Lucas, the entrance is on the south side of U.S. 34 less than one half mile west of U.S. 65. Continue on and go past another slight curve. There will be another "Turkey Habitat" sign on the right side. The area was between 0.1 and 0.2 miles past that sign. Just sit and wait or drive back and forth.

| | | | In northern Madison Co. From Booneville, just west-southwest of Des Moines, take F-90/360th St. west one mile to Tabor Rd. Take Tabor south one half mile to 365th St., and then go west one mile to R-16. Less than two miles south on R-16 look for water on both sides of the road. One half mile further south, take G-14 east one half mile to a boat ramp for further scoping. | | |
| | | | Jensen Marsh is at T75N R26W Sect. 1, mostly in Madison Co. Evidently the eastern end of the site just crosses the county line into Warren Co. This is south of Bevington, north of Charles. Parking is at the west end of this rather linear site. Walk east along the dike, stopping frequently to scope the very many waterfowl as your moving along disturbs them.
We approached from the south on R35, turned right at the sign.
|
| | | Hawthorn W.A. (see Lake Hawthorn) | | | |
| | | Lake Hawthorn (Hawthorn W.A.) | In extreme northeast Mahaska Co., about 1.5 miles south of Barnes City. The main entrance is east off V-13, 1/4 mile north of G-17, and difficult to spot. Where the the main entrance road forks, both roads lead to parking on the water, and together these cover scoping for the entire north arm and the middle third of the lake. The remaining east part of the lake is viewable from Victoria Ave. crossing the water: Return to V-13 and drive south one mile past G-17 (120th St.) to 130th St. on the east (left). Proceed east on 130th for 1.5 miles to Victoria Ave. and turn north (left). Victoria crosses the lake at 3/4 of a mile. Returning to V-13 from here is much simpler by retracing your route than by continuing north toward Barnes City. | | |
| | | | In southeast Mahaska Co., about five miles east of Oskaloosa alongside Hwy. 92. A parking area for the northeast side of the marsh is at T-60/Snyder Rd. A parking area on the southeast side of the marsh is just up Snyder Rd., on the right. The west end of the marsh can be viewed by walking in that direction from the end of the southside parking area, a short distance through grass, although there is no actual trail. | | |
|
| | | Boxcars, The (Red Rock W.A.) | In the northwest corner of Marion Co. Along Hwy. 14, either two miles south of Monroe (in Jasper Co.), or three miles north of G-28 at Lake Red Rock, take Carpenter St. going west; 6.5 miles west along Carpenter, after passing 72nd Ave. to the north, take 68th Ave. south to the Boxcars boat ramp area along the Des Moines River. (In the Sportsman's Atlas, 68th Ave. is not marked and appears, misleadingly, as a very short spur before Carpenter dead-ends). | | |
| | | Lake Red Rock, dam, waterfowl and gulls | In northern Marion Co. Scope above the dam from the overlook behind the Visitor’s Center at the south end of the dam (T-15), and from a small turn-in at the north end of the dam. | | | | In northwest Marion Co. From the town of Runnells in extreme southeast Polk Co., travel five miles south on Hwy. 316 to Dubuque St. (Dubuque St. is about four miles south of Runnells W.A.). Before reaching Dubuque you will pass the road to the town of Swan, to the east, and Dubuque will be one more mile south from here. Proceed east on Dubuque three miles to where it curves south (right), becoming 40th St. At this point, however, take the gravel road going north, to your left. Follow this to the parking area at the water. Walking the area requires boots. Start out straight ahead north from the parking area, walking an old roadbed. The roadbed is often under shallow water in a couple of short stretches, but not deeper than standard rubber boot height. Eventually turn right (east) for more viewing, although these sections can be very mucky in places. | | |

| | | | In the southwest corner of Muscatine Co., and somewhat rough in places - Along Hwy. 92, just east over the river from Columbus Junction in Louisa Co., take G-40 north through Fredonia. After emerging from Fredonia, follow G-40 north and east a little under four miles to Q Ave., on the left. Go north on Q Ave., including two jogs, about 1.5 miles to the entrance on the right, after a line of pines. The first left from the trail off the parking lot leads to steep wooded bluffs and a creek. The trail gets thin in places going in, and at creek-level there are nettles and mosquitoes. The woods on the bluff across the creek has a good trail, but otherwise the park is unfinished in this section; best to stick to the woods itself. The other half of the park, south of the trail off the parking lot, is field and shrub. | | |
| | | | In central Muscatine Co. Along Hwy. 22 about six miles east of Nichols or six miles west of Muscatine, X-43/Independence Ave. meets Hwy. 22 on the south side. One quarter mile east of X-43 is Bayfield Rd., a gravel road, going north. Follow Bayfield north one mile, eventually including short bends right, left, and right. | | | | The duck ponds are off the south side of NE 126th Avenue to the east of the ranger's house and associated buildings.
How to get there. From NE 134th Ave (aka F22 on the DeLorme Gazetteer), head south on NE 80th Street. At the end of this road, you'll automatically be heading east onto NE 126th Ave, which is smoothly paved.
After about three-fourths of a mile, look for some buildings (including the ranger's house) on the north side of the road. Just before these buildings, there is a large, rectangular parking lot. Park here. (You could alternatively park in a small area that is ENE of the ranger's house, but the big lot is probably the best bet on weekends - and it's close to where you'll need to walk anyway.)
Now, walk out and follow 126th Ave again to the east. After a short distance, about where a separate road heads to the north, notice that 126th is gated. Walk past this gate and continue east along the gravel two-track path.
After a leisurely ~10-minute walk, you'll see the unlabeled "duck ponds" off the south side of the path. These ponds are obviously much deeper than the wetlands you may have noticed during the first part of the walk. At my last check, there was an elevated outlet pipe distributing water into the ponds.

Alternatively, a little farther north from here as the highway curves leftward, take the dead-end road going east, Vandalia Dr. On entering this road, follow a somewhat challenging dirt lane to the right (south), below the highway, until you can turn east again, toward the ponds. Not a smooth drive -- walking may be preferable.

(They have recently diverted the road to allow longer trains. At the stop sign about 2 miles west of I-29, turn north (right) for about 0.5 miles then turn left at the sign for Port Neal, Terra Chem and others. It crosses the tracks, turns south and rejoins the original road that had no jog.)
However, this is private property and a security clearance is required. If you have been previously cleared to visit either this plant or their plant at Council Bluffs to see the Piping Plovers, there is no problem. Otherwise you probably will need an escourt of a birder with a clearance.
