Steve Betchkal Keynote Speaker - Steve Betchkal

The Canada Warbler in the Coal Mine

Nature's systems  are marvelous and efficient "organisms," the product of millions of years of fine-tuning. But what happens if you tinker with the parts? Join ornithologist Steve Betchkal as he explains how climate crisis is impacting birds and bird conservation.

Steve Betchkal (BETCH-cull) of Eau Claire (Oh Claire) has hiked/camped/backpacked/traveled 49 U.S. states, 52 National Forests, 78 National Wildlife Refuges, 89 National Parks, & 4 Canadian provinces in pursuit of wild birds. In 2017 he worked in the Galápagos for Lindblad-National Geographic.

Steve is the Vice President of Gaylord Nelson Audubon, founder of MartinMart and Welcome Back Bird Day, the producer of The Wisconsin Society for Ornithology’s Bird TV, and currently the content editor for WSO’s Wisconsin’s Favorite Bird Haunts. In his 35 years as a professional journalist, he has produced 11,000 TV stories, and won nearly 80 awards for excellence in journalism. He is the only journalist in Chippewa Valley history to win five Emmys and an Edward R. Murrow Award.

Steve is a popular public speaker, and the author of eight books, including All of This & Robins Too, Make Birds Not War, Wisconsin Birding Trails, Cat Tales, Walk the Walk, Camp the Camp, Bird the Bird, & his latest, 101 Apologus Nights.
