Over the weekend of April 24 - 26, 2026, 96 members of the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union gathered at Upper Iowa University in Fayette for the annual Spring Conference. The conference focused on immersing attendees in Iowa's Driftless Region, offering the opportunity to explore its distinct landscape, observe the specific bird species that live there, and learn firsthand about regional conservation efforts.
On Saturday afternoon, the educational presentations focused on regional forest management and species conservation. Trent Stuchel, a Forester with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, discussed how intentional silviculture practices can be used to shape and improve habitats for birds. Following him, Jon Stravers of Driftless Area Bird Conservation shared insights and data from his long-term monitoring of two key species in northeastern Iowa: the Cerulean Warbler and the Red-shouldered Hawk.
Field trips throughout the weekend allowed members to explore a diverse range of local ecosystems. Groups visited Volga River State Recreation Area, Echo Valley State Park, and Adam’s Fen, a private property stewarded by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. Excursions also headed to Sweet Marsh Wildlife Area, which included a specialized kayak birding trip. Despite the early spring timing, attendees tallied 103 species.
The highlight of the weekend was the keynote address by Dexter Patterson, widely known as "Wisco Birder." Patterson delivered an engaging presentation centered on outdoor inclusivity, sharing his work to break down barriers and increase access to "bird joy" for all people, regardless of background or experience level.
Many thanks to IOU member and Upper Iowa University Associate Professor Paul Skrade and members of the Upper Iowa University Audubon Society Student Chapter for hosting the meeting and helping lead field trips. These wonderful experiences would not be possible without our local hosts!
